Outdoor Immersions

Syd Dulaney, avid hiker and North Country Trail supporter
Wednesdays, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. October 1, 8, 15, 22, (backup date 29). Location varies weekly. Class size unlimited.

The goals of this activity are to enjoy the outdoors, become familiar with trails near Albion, and practice healthy walking techniques. These hikes will not be strenuous, and you have the option to turn back when you feel halfway done. Generally the walks will be a few yards to three miles, you choose. If you wish to only walk a few yards from parking to a chair or bench, you can still immerse in nature and enjoy “Seton Watching.” If you can walk farther, you can enjoy trails, changing views, and various hiking techniques such as “Japanese Walking.” Maps, parking, ride sharing and restroom information is provided.

Walk in Whitehouse Nature Center. We will enter through the WNC back door – the student garden entrance. Trails are flat, solid ground.

Walk Menwabek County Park, including a section of the North Country Trail. This is one of the newest trails near Albion. The trail is paved, has benches to sit on, and is planted in native wildflowers. Add on trails are mowed and allow forest elements.

Walk the Marshall board walk trail along the Kalamazoo River. This trail follows the shore of the Kalamazoo River. The boardwalk is well maintained, and the cool shade is perfect for enjoying this part of the North Country Trail. Several platforms have benches to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of the river.

Walk Brooks Nature Center east of Marshall. This not so little gem has a variety of habitats (prairie, woods, lakeshore) making it nice for birding and plant/tree identification. Tree huggers will enjoy meeting a giant, glorious Black Tupelo tree.
