A Brief History Of Jazz
A Brief History Of Jazz
James Ball, D.M.A.
Professor of Music, Albion College.
Wednesdays, May 8, 15, 22, 29; 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
This course will discuss the primary periods and styles of jazz from its origins through the 1960s and beyond (time permitting). We’ll discuss jazz influences and ethnic social ramifications from the African American church, through Black Face Minstrelsy, to New Orleans, Chicago, New York and the world, listening to and viewing early through contemporary audio and video jazz recordings. The careers and music of jazz greats including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane will be covered.
Sit back (but not too far), tap your toes, stomp your feet, clap your hands (but not too much when I am lecturing and you are discussing). Take in the rhythms and feel the pulse. Think about the sites, sights, and sounds of jazz.
